Update from LINXS Director

The move into The Loop is finally complete after a huge amount of organisational and physical effort – particular thanks are due to Anna Ntinidou and Shandana Mufti for so much work – well beyond the call of duty. Activities & events started at an increased level pretty much immediately and the impact of the new environment both within and without the building has been remarkable. The new premises are purpose-designed to the needs of LINXS with flexible arrangements for workshops, conferences, panel meetings. The proximity to Camurus, Science Village Svandinavia (SVS), Altitude, NanoElec and Vectura and the 900-person auditorium adds a totally new scope to our mission.

The first events benefitting from this include seminars from Petri Kursula (Bergen) and Augusto Marcelli (Italian attache to Sweden in Stockholm), a meeting of the Sentio Competence Centre, a visit of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) Finance Committee, a gathering of the first local AMBER postdoctoral recruits (see picture below), the MATRAC School, a workshop on Women in Science, and the Gregori Aminoff Prize Symposium in honour of Simon Billinge (Columbia University, USA).

There has also been a constant flow of curious visitors – so if you feel like dropping in – don’t hesitate!

A further reminder of the LINXS Inaugural Conference in midsummer week (17-18 June) – this should be a very lively event with a dinner finale from the Brass Benders. Registrations will close at 200 and we are currently at about 160 – so sign up soon if you want to come.

As of 1st March, LINXS is organisationally placed within the Science Faculty and responsible to the Dean of Science who carries the stakeholder portfolio on behalf of the Science, Engineering, and Medical Faculties and the University centrally. This is an excellent arrangement that allows LINXS to better deliver on its local, national, and international missions.

In other news, applications to the latest Theme call are under review, with outcomes that will hopefully be revealed later this year. The 3rd AMBER recruitment round is nearing completion, and the 4th AMBER call will be published in June.

Make sure to read all the material on our website, including interviews and articles about our recent Theme activities as well as the report from the Swedish Research Council on bottlenecks hindering the use of the research infrastructures.
