Title: X-ray CT: What resolution do you really need?
Abstract
X-ray tomography is a well-established technique for visualizing and analyzing the three-dimensional internal structure of objects. Its use, having emerged from the medical field, is spreading exponentially in both research and industry. While it is simple to implement, there is a wide variety of CT devices, from a portable system to the large research infrastructure as synchrotrons. In order to find the most suitable instrument for the specific research, it can be helpful to define the resolution one needs, understood as the ability to:
- visualize details of a certain size (spatial resolution)
- distinguish regions that are very similar to each other (contrast resolution)
- monitor something that is happening (temporal resolution)
Some examples will clarify the various concepts.
Bio
Dr. Diego Dreossi is a physicist expert in instrumentation and X-ray imaging techniques. He has started his career working in several experiments at large scale accelerators at CERN (Geneva) and Fermilab (Batavia, Illinois) as associate member of INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics, Italy) developing new position sensitive detectors. After a SIEMENS fellowship for CT imaging quality optimization, he moved to the University of Trieste (Italy) at the Biophysics Biochemistry and Macromolecular Department where spent two years for the implementation of new X-ray imaging modalities on cartilage and cancellous bone studies. From 2000 to 2006 he was a research assistant in Physics at the University of Trieste in the frame of SYRMEP (Synchrotron Radiation for Medical Physics) collaboration working as a project coordinator of clinical experimentation on Mammography with Synchrotron x-rays at Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste (Italy). In that period, he had a contract as a software consultant at Mechanical Engineering Department (University of Trieste) and invented, together with prof. Cosmi, a patent (UD2004A000120) “Procedimento per la realizzazione di un prodotto per la modellazione e simulazione di problemi scientifici ed ingegneristici” (Procedure for the realization of a product for the modeling and simulation of scientific and engineering problems, patentee University of Trieste). In 2006 he became a Scientist and Technical manager at the X-ray imaging beamline at Elettra pursuing his research activity in biomedical and material science. Besides this activity, during the past years he has been involved in several industrial collaborations through the Industrial Liaison Office of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and has been actively participate into the the design and construction of the X-ray microCT laboratories in Italy and abroad.
He taught “Applied Physics” for 15 years at the University of Trieste and Udine, begin co- and advisor of several degree thesis.
